The Machame Route, nicknamed the "Whiskey Route" for its reputation as more challenging than the Marangu "Coca-Cola" route, is the most popular path on Kilimanjaro. It offers stunning scenery through five diverse climate zones and boasts one of the highest summit success rates due to its excellent acclimatization profile.
The route approaches from the south and descends via the Mweka trail, offering different scenery on the way down. You'll traverse the Shira Plateau, climb the Lava Tower, and navigate the Great Barranco Wall before making your summit attempt from Barafu Camp.
Moderate to Challenging - Suitable for fit hikers with some trekking experience
After breakfast at your hotel, drive to Machame Gate where you'll complete park registration and meet your crew. Begin hiking through the lush rainforest, home to blue monkeys and colorful birds. The trail is well-maintained but can be muddy. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.
Leave the forest behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper and rockier as you hike up a ridge, passing volcanic rocks and enjoying views of Kibo Peak. Cross a stream valley before reaching Shira Camp, situated on a plateau with dramatic views of Mount Meru and the Shira Cathedral formation.
This is a crucial acclimatization day. Hike toward Kibo Peak, ascending to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch. This "climb high, sleep low" approach helps your body adjust to the altitude. After lunch, descend into the Great Barranco Valley, passing beautiful Senecio trees. Barranco Camp offers stunning views of the iconic Barranco Wall.
Start the day by scrambling up the Great Barranco Wall - an exhilarating non-technical climb with incredible views. This is often the highlight of the trek! After descending into the Karanga Valley, climb to Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for rest and further acclimatization before the summit push.
Hike through the alpine desert zone to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. "Barafu" means "ice" in Swahili, and you'll understand why at this altitude. Arrive early afternoon, rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the midnight summit push. Dinner is served early to allow for sleep before the big night.
Wake at midnight for a light snack and begin the challenging ascent in darkness. Follow switchbacks up the scree slope, reaching Stella Point (5,739m) at the crater rim for sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point at 5,895m. Celebrate your achievement, then descend to Barafu for lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp for overnight.
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you'll sign out and receive your summit certificates. Say goodbye to your crew and meet your driver for the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a hot shower, celebratory meal, and well-deserved rest!
