About Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park may be one of Tanzania's smaller parks at just 330 square kilometers, but it packs an incredible diversity of habitats and wildlife into its compact area. Stretching along the base of the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment, the park features groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, open savannah, hot springs, and the alkaline Lake Manyara itself—which can host millions of flamingos during certain seasons.

The Famous Tree-Climbing Lions

Lake Manyara is renowned for its population of tree-climbing lions, one of only two populations in Tanzania known for this unusual behavior. These big cats can often be spotted draped over acacia branches, escaping the heat of the ground and avoiding biting insects. While sightings are never guaranteed, Manyara offers one of the best opportunities to witness this unique behavior.

A Birder's Paradise

With over 400 recorded bird species, Lake Manyara is a paradise for birdwatchers. The alkaline lake attracts vast flocks of greater and lesser flamingos, creating a stunning pink fringe along the shoreline. Pelicans, cormorants, storks, and over 30 species of birds of prey can also be spotted. The groundwater forest is home to noisy troops of baboons and blue monkeys, while the acacia woodlands host elephant herds and the elusive leopard.
