The Lemosho Route is considered the most beautiful and scenic path on Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting on the western side of the mountain, this route offers stunning views, excellent acclimatization, and the highest summit success rates. The longer duration allows for better altitude adjustment, making it ideal for climbers who want to maximize their chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
The route traverses the Shira Plateau, one of the most dramatic landscapes on Kilimanjaro, before joining the Machame Route. You'll experience pristine wilderness, less crowded trails, and incredible scenery through all five climate zones. The gradual ascent profile and extra acclimatization day give climbers the best opportunity for a successful summit.
Moderate - Excellent for first-time high-altitude trekkers
Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate (2-3 hours) through scenic farmland and forests. Complete registration and meet your crew. Begin hiking through the pristine rainforest, one of the most beautiful sections of any Kilimanjaro route. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and colorful turacos. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") Camp for dinner and overnight.
Leave the forest and enter the heather and moorland zone. Hike toward the Shira Plateau, a UNESCO World Heritage site formed by a collapsed volcanic cone. The trail offers breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the Great Rift Valley. Shira Camp 1 sits on the plateau with stunning sunset views over Mount Meru in the distance.
Enjoy a relatively easy day traversing the Shira Plateau. Walk past the iconic Shira Cathedral formation and visit ancient lava flows. The plateau offers incredible panoramic views and is one of the best spots for photography on the mountain. Arrive at Shira Camp 2 in time for lunch, with the afternoon free to rest and acclimatize.
This is a crucial acclimatization day. Hike toward Kibo Peak, passing the jagged Lava Tower formation. Climb to 4,630m for lunch, following the "climb high, sleep low" principle. After lunch, descend into the Great Barranco Valley through beautiful giant senecios and lobelias. Barranco Camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall.
Start with an exhilarating scramble up the Great Barranco Wall. This non-technical climb is a highlight of the route with incredible views. After descending into the Karanga Valley, climb to Karanga Camp. This shorter hiking day provides additional acclimatization time before the summit push.
Hike through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Arrive early afternoon to rest, hydrate, and prepare gear. The afternoon provides crucial rest time before the midnight summit push. Dinner is served early to allow for sleep.
Wake at midnight and begin the challenging ascent under starlight. Follow switchbacks up scree slopes, reaching Stella Point (5,739m) for a spectacular sunrise over the crater. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, Africa's highest point at 5,895m. Celebrate your achievement, then descend to Barafu for lunch before continuing to Mweka Camp.
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Sign out and receive your summit certificates. Say goodbye to your incredible crew before the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Time for a well-deserved hot shower and celebration!
