About Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is arguably Africa's most famous national park and the ultimate safari destination. Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, make their circular journey through the ecosystem.
The Great Migration
The Great Migration is a year-round phenomenon, with the herds constantly moving in search of fresh grass. The timing of specific events varies each year, but generally follows this pattern:
Calving Season (Southern Serengeti)
The herds gather on the nutrient-rich short grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region. This is when around 8,000 wildebeest are born each day, attracting predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas.
The Long Trek Begins
As the dry season approaches, the herds begin their northward journey in long columns that stretch across the plains. This is also the rainy season, making the landscape lush and green with fewer tourists.
Western Corridor & Grumeti River
The migration reaches the western corridor where they must cross the Grumeti River. This dramatic crossing sees crocodiles waiting in ambush—a highlight for wildlife photographers.
Northern Serengeti & Mara River
The most dramatic river crossings occur at the Mara River as herds cross between Tanzania and Kenya's Masai Mara. Thousands of animals brave the crocodile-infested waters in a spectacle that defines African safari.
Return Journey
The herds begin moving southward through the eastern Serengeti (Loliondo area), completing their circular journey as short rains bring fresh grass to the southern plains.
