The Marangu Route, nicknamed the "Coca-Cola Route," is the oldest and most established path on Mount Kilimanjaro. It's the only route that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it popular among those who prefer more comfortable lodging. The route uses the same path for ascent and descent, so you'll see the scenery twice from different perspectives.
While the Marangu Route is often considered the easiest due to its gradual slopes and hut accommodation, the shorter duration (5-6 days) means less time for acclimatization, which can impact summit success rates. We strongly recommend the 6-day option to improve your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Sleep in mountain huts with beds and mattresses - no camping required!
After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for registration. Begin your hike through the lush montane rainforest, keeping an eye out for blue monkeys and colorful birds. The trail is well-maintained and gradual. Arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon. Optional walk to Maundi Crater for views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding area.
Leave the forest and enter the heather and moorland zone. Pass through open grasslands and enjoy views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Horombo Hut, situated on a plateau with stunning mountain views. This is an important acclimatization stop with options for extra nights.
This extra day is crucial for acclimatization and significantly improves summit success rates. Take a day hike toward Mawenzi Peak, reaching approximately 4,500m before returning to Horombo for lunch. The afternoon is free to rest. This "climb high, sleep low" approach helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Enter the alpine desert zone as you hike toward Kibo Hut. The landscape becomes increasingly barren and rocky. Cross the "saddle" between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut early afternoon, rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. This is a challenging night as anticipation builds.
Wake at midnight for a light snack and begin the steep ascent under starlight. Follow the zigzag path up the scree slope, a challenging 6-8 hour climb to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Africa's highest point. Celebrate before descending back to Kibo Hut and continuing down to Horombo Hut for overnight.
Descend through the moorland and forest zones to Marangu Gate. Sign out and receive your summit certificates. Say goodbye to your crew before the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Time for a well-deserved hot shower, celebratory meal, and rest!
