The Northern Circuit is the newest and longest route on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering the highest summit success rates due to excellent acclimatization. This premium route approaches from the west, traverses the remote northern slopes, and provides an unforgettable wilderness experience with very few other climbers.
The route starts on the Lemosho trailhead before branching north around Kibo Peak. You'll experience diverse landscapes from rainforest to alpine desert, with breathtaking views of the mountain from angles most climbers never see. The extended 9-day itinerary allows for optimal altitude adjustment, making this the best choice for those who want to maximize their summit chances.
Moderate - Long duration but gradual ascent profile
Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate (2-3 hours) through scenic farmland. Complete registration and meet your crew. Begin hiking through pristine montane rainforest, one of the most beautiful sections on Kilimanjaro. Look for colobus monkeys and turacos. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") Camp for dinner and overnight.
Leave the forest and enter the heather and moorland zone. Hike toward the Shira Plateau, formed by a collapsed volcanic cone. The trail offers breathtaking views of Kibo Peak and the Great Rift Valley. Shira Camp 1 sits on the plateau with stunning sunset views over Mount Meru.
Today you branch off onto the Northern Circuit! Instead of heading toward Lava Tower with the crowds, turn north and follow a less-traveled path toward Moir Hut. This remote area offers incredible views and solitude. The camp is situated in a valley beneath the Northern Icefields, a truly spectacular setting.
Continue traversing the northern slopes of Kibo, enjoying views that few climbers ever see. Pass through volcanic landscapes and alpine desert. The trail undulates as you make your way toward Buffalo Camp, named after the Cape Buffalo that occasionally pass through. The solitude and scenery make this day unforgettable.
Continue your traverse along the northern slopes, descending slightly to Third Cave Camp. This is a shorter hiking day that provides excellent acclimatization. The afternoon is free to rest and explore. Tonight you rejoin the main trail network, but you'll notice significantly fewer crowds than other routes.
Begin the climb toward the summit trail. Hike through the alpine desert toward School Hut, positioned at the base of Kibo Peak. This camp is higher than most, providing a shorter summit night. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight ascent. Dinner is served early to allow for sleep.
Wake at midnight for the summit push. This route offers a slightly shorter summit night than other approaches. Climb through the darkness on switchback trails, reaching Gilman's Point (5,681m) for sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Africa's highest point. Celebrate, then descend to Horombo Hut for overnight.
An optional rest day at Horombo Hut allows you to recover from the summit push and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Take a short hike to Zebra Rocks or simply relax at camp. This day can be combined with the descent if you prefer a shorter itinerary. Either option provides a wonderful end to your climb.
Descend through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Sign out and receive your summit certificates. Say goodbye to your incredible crew before the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Time for a well-deserved celebration of your amazing achievement on Africa's highest peak!
